Microsoft and NVIDIA readying killer smartphone

According to a new report, Microsoft is ready to take the smartphone set by the scruff of the neck and its hiring some muscle from NVIDIA to help bully the competition.

Coming from the Inquirer the report reads:

“What do you get if you take an iPhone, remove the clean UI, user friendliness, nice industrial design, battery life, cachet, functional OS, and in general everything else that makes it worthwhile? The new Microsoft phone, powered by NVIDIA.”

It’s a churlish take on the situation but the core of the claim is that the Redmond leviathan will unveil a G1/iPhone baiting device at February’s 3GSM conference in Barcelona next year.

Nvidia’s Tegra does some showing off

We just heard about Nvidia’s all conquering smartphone chip, Tegra, at the start of this week and already some videos showing off what it can do are starting to filter through. Integrated into an unnamed touchscreen device, it seems the Tegra is packing some serious heat (even though it uses much less power than its peers).

Here it is showing off its user interface (which apparently comes as part of the package) with the snazzy looking RayGun Navigator application from Planet 9.

Nvidia readies smartphone super chip

Remember that ultra powerful device we saw at Mobile World Congress? The Nvidia APX 2500? Course you do, well it seems like it was just a mere glimpse of some much bigger plans that Nvidia has for shaking up the smartphone world.

The chip company is currently working on what it calls “mobile computer on a chip” architecture, or Tegra for brevity’s sake. It’s pretty powerful stuff and Nvidia is currently setting the wheels in motion to make it mainstream via numerous partnerships for a range of products planned for late 2008 early 2009.
