Dedit - freeware text editor for S60

deditI do a lot of my writing in plain text editors. Word processors are great for formatting and spellchecking but usually if I just need to write something I will use TextPad or Notepad (at a push) on Windows, Vim or GEdit on Linux.

From today I will be using Dedit on my S60 phone. Dedit is a freeware text editor that runs on Symbian S60 2nd & 3rd Edition phones, written by Ukrainian developer Juriy Bakunin.

Dedit uses its own user interface code, allowing it to squeeze a bit more screen real estate out of your phone. It is also fully multi-tasking, which lets you edit multiple files at once and copy/paste between them.

Text entry is performed using the keypad and the app has been designed with one-handed use in mind via a comprehensive menu system. Basically, if you can send an SMS you can edit a document with Dedit.

The only glaring omission is a spellcheck, which would be a big help given the text-entry system.

That aside, Dedit is fast and configurable and was able to open even very large (novel length) text documents. Why not give it a try and write your masterpiece while on the tube?
