Toshiba unveils the Portégé, otherwise known as the other G810

t.jpgIt looks like Samsung isn’t the only company releasing a device called the G810; perhaps nobody told Toshiba. At any rate Toshiba’s Portégé G810 is quite a different beast with the spec sheet suggesting more of a focus on business use as opposed to high-end mobile photography.

So it’s no surprise that the Portégé is a Windows Mobile based handset with full Microsoft Office Mobile support. The device is packing HSDPA connectivity as well as connectivity to GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 3G and both GPS and A-GPS too. Amazingly the connectivity of the Portégé doesn’t end there with support for Bluetooth and wifi thrown in too.

Toshiba’s mini phone-come-3G modem, the G450

Toshiba G450One of the strangest things we came across at the Mobile World Congress was the Toshiba G450. Marketed under the title ‘So Much, Yet So Small’, as well as acting as a phone, this tiny device is designed to work as a 3G/HSDPA modem for workers on the go.
The thinking seems to be that it’s so small you can use it as some sort of backup emergency mobile (it also does MP3 playback and comes with 160MB of memory), while you can plug it into your laptop via mini USB to get online with download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. It will simultaneously work as a phone in such a configuration but apparently you have to dial out using a PC software utility, selecting from your contacts list or typing in the number via the laptop’s keyboard/mouse.

Fill up for extra power with Toshiba’s fuel cell mobile

toshiba_fuel-cell.jpgFuel cells are one of those cutting edge technologies that have been knocking around for years, but at the Mobile World Congress, Toshiba seems to be well on the way to releasing products based on the technology. In this case, the system’s called the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell, because - we’re guessing - you directly fill up your fuel cell-enabled phone with a dash of liquid methanol when you’re running out of juice.
Two examples were shown. One (as pictured) sees the fuel cell directly integrated into the phone, while the other uses it in a separate mobile battery charger. One refill on the phone is said to provide double the operating time of the standard battery, while in the case of the charger, a full charge would enable you to recharge the inbuilt Lithium Ion battery on your phone two or three times.
Commercial deployment is expected in Japan either in late 2008 or early 2009 but as yet there are currently no plans for the tech to be released in the west.

Toshiba’s threesome – the G910, G710 and G450.

Toshiba’s always struggled to break into the top tier of phone makers but with its three new devices, unveiled a few days ago, it’s showing signs of ambition.

toshiba-portege-g910-italy.jpgThe G910 (right) is a clamshell smartphone looking suspiciously like a Nokia E90, albeit without a keypad on its front. To use it you really do have to open it up. The device itself does Windows Mobile 6 Professional (can you guess who it’s aimed at?), has all the usual quad-band, GPRS, HDSPA and GPS so beloved of smartphones these days. It’s expected Sim-free price is going to be around €600.

toshiba-portege-g710.jpgThe second device, the G710 (right) is another business smartphone looking like a BlackBerry. It too has GPS and Windows Mobile (but only the standard version) and doesn’t have 3G. It does have a 2.4-inch screen though and will be cheaper at €300 Sim-free.

The third, and by no means least phone, is the G450 (below). This is by far the most interesting. It has 3G/HSDPA compatibility, but the tiny device (98×36x16mm) also doubles as a USB modem for computers, a MP3 player and has an OLED display and 160MB of memory. And it’s going to be dead cheap at only €100 Sim-free.
