Man drops phone down train toilet, havoc ensues

See, now, if the plans to jam mobile phone signals on trains go through people will start trying to get creative and we could end up seeing a lot more of this sort of thing.

A passenger on a French TGV train somehow managed to drop his mobile phone down the toilet. Crouching down to fish it out he - and again it is not entirely clear how this happened - accidentally stuck his hand really far down. It was at this point that the automated suction mechanism kicked in, dragging his hand even further in and trapping him.

The normally high-speed train was delayed for two hours between La Rochelle and Paris while firefighters cut through the pipes. The shame-faced passenger was then carried into a waiting ambulance with the toilet still attached to his arm.

No word on the whereabouts of his phone, although he probably stopped wanting it back after the first hour or so.

Virgin trains get mobile reception boost, commuters warned to watch what they say

virgin.jpgLoudly informing loved ones that you are ON THE TRAIN will soon be much clearer - or it will if you are on one of the 52 Virgin trains that are to receive signal repeaters to boost mobile reception.

Repeaters grab 2G & 3G signals, boost them and retransmit them. Virgin plans to roll out repeaters on all 52 trains running its London to Glasgow route by November this year.

The ability to chat on the train might come at a cost though - a survey by Vodfone into business users phone habits reckons that around 70% of people have discussed business in public on their mobile and around 15 % have spoken about confidential business information over the phone.

On the flipside, a worrying 26 % claim to have followed up on evesdriopped business leads.

It’s good to talk, but maybe it’s better to text?
