We have all heard the ‘mobile might be cancerous’ cat calls from various corners of the scientific community but a cruel hoax has recently taken root in Angola that is causing people to believe that their mobiles could cause them much more immediate harm.
Last year a wave of fake phone warnings swept Pakistan and Afghanistan by SMS. The fake warnings claimed, “as soon as you answer your phone blood comes out of your mouth, nose and ears and you die”. It seems a variant of this malicious urban legend is now being spread in Angola.
A spokesman for Angolan carrier Unitel, Henrique da Silva, has condemned the rumours as a ‘bad joke’
It’s a bad joke, and we are asking our customers to keep calm and we encourage you to handle your cell phones without any problems. There is no computing virus causing death to human beings”, stressed the official.
The things some people do for kicks…
