Although the imminent arrival of Windows Mobile 6.1 is hardly a well kept industry secret, having been spotted on Sony Ericsson’s forthcoming Xperia X1 handset at MWC last month, rumors are pouring through that Microsoft is still planning a bit of a fanfare for its official release.
The news hounds over at Pocket-lint claim that Microsoft will officially launch Windows Mobile 6.1 at CTIA next week on April 1 (not confirmed but probably not an April fools joke). Of course that doesn’t mean that it will be hitting the streets any time soon but at least it means we might learn some more about its touted improved features.
Unfortunately all indications are that we will have to wait a bit longer for more details about the lip-smackingly gorgeous Xperia X1.

You may remember that not so long ago we heard a rumor that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 was going to be delayed until 2009. Well it looks like it is time to stop wringing that handkerchief and biting those nails as Sony Ericsson’s Corporate Vice President of Global Communications, Aldo Ligouri, has made good with a statement assuring the good folks at the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog that the device will definitely be launching this year albeit in the second half.
I can confirm that we will be launching the X1 product in 2nd Half of 2008, as per our announcement of 10th February.
It couldn’t be made much plainer than that. Still, that could be anything up to the 31st of December so don’t go getting all excited just yet.

The word round the campfire today is that Sony Ericsson’s recently announced flagship handset, the Xperia X1, might be facing a delay of up to a year. The source of this unconfirmed rumour is the SEMC Blog, which claims to have a table of legitimate release dates for all of Sony Ericsson’s announced new handsets for this year.
The table lists the Xperia X1 as launching on February 10th 2009 which if true could be disastrous for the device. It wouldn’t look good for Sony Ericsson to let its new flagship handset slip that far and considering how quickly the technological landscape evolves in the mobile space, the Xperia might not seem like quite the showstopper is does at the moment in a year’s time.
Some are speculating that perhaps the delay of Windows Mobile 6.1 could be holding back the device but even if that is the case, a full year seems slightly excessive. We’ll surely know more about this by the end of the week so stay tuned to see if this rumour is in fact the awful truth.

What clever marketing from the chaps at Sony Ericsson, which announced its XPERIA X1 (SEX1 - getit?) phone at the start of the week. Still, like the real thing, it’s harder to get your hands on the XPERIA than it is to get satisfaction in a nunnery (we’re guessing). In fact, the only person who allowed to get his hands on is the poor old SE demo guy, who’s now has photos of his digits spread all over the internet.
So after he clocked off for the day, we got these shots. Plenty more after the break.

The leak about Sony Ericsson’s G series of handsets last week seems to have deflected attention away from the company’s real show stopping announcement. Out of nowhere at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Sony Ericsson has unveiled the XPERIA X1 convergence phone.
The device is a has a full three inch VGA touchscreen nestling on top of an arc sliding QUERTY that shimmies out from the side of the device. Not only that but there are various face buttons on the device too designed to make assigning specific controls all the easier.
The device is packing Windows Mobile rather than Symbian and has a full suite of multimedia bells and whistles to make use of its copious interface options. That means the PlayNow music service is built in along with Windows Media Player Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile an FM radio, video streaming and support for 3D games.
